Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Inter-ethnic relations have long been a defining feature of Nigerian politics, where diverse ethnic groups coexist and often compete for political power and representation. Lokoja LGA in Kogi State is home to a wide range of ethnic groups, each with distinct cultural identities, and this diversity shapes the political landscape in the area. Understanding how inter-ethnic relations impact political representation is crucial for assessing democratic practices in Lokoja LGA, particularly regarding how various groups access political power, how political leaders represent ethnic interests, and how political inclusivity is promoted (Aliyu, 2024).
Ethnic-based political dynamics often influence the selection of political leaders, voter preferences, and party affiliations in Lokoja LGA. The study aims to examine how inter-ethnic relations impact political representation in the area, with a particular focus on the role ethnic identities play in shaping political alignments, candidate selection, and overall participation in the political process. Limitations include challenges in obtaining sensitive data on ethnic relations due to the potential for political polarization and ethnic tensions.

• Political Representation: The process through which elected officials represent the interests and concerns of their constituents.
